IN THIS LESSON
Let's talk about when to do what with the two most common enrollment periods:
1) If you're turning 65 you have a 7 month window to sign up. The 3 months before/after your birthday and the month of.
Medicare always starts on the first of the month(unless your birthday is on the first of the month, then Medicare starts the month prior).
2) If you're working past 65, people typically only sign up for Part A when they turn 65. Then start the Part B process 3 months before retirement. You need two forms you fill out CMS-40 form. Your employer fills out CMS-564 form. These forms go to Social Security.
3) Special situations to watch out for:
If you're collecting disability for 24 months you are automatically enrolled in Medicare.
You are only automatically enrolled if you start collecting Social Security before age 65.
Our team can coordinate and set up all the necessary paperwork for you as well as handle the submission process with Social Security as part of your employee benefits. Please feel free to reach out to our team for additional assistance.
